Sending a child to an Independent school such as Strathcona-Tweedmuir involves more than choice for Alberta families. It involves money - $22,000-$28,000/year plus other fees.

Renfrew Educational Services is an Independent school for children with special needs. They charge $100/month for ECS 1/2 day M-F programs; $450/month for Elementary program. In addition to the funding from Alberta Education, they receive funding from Calgary and Area Child and Family Services (public money), as well as from private foundations and donors.

Again - parents may wish to choose an Independent school - or a charter school because of the smaller class sizes, range of programs, excellent facilities or special programs but they can only choose if they are able to afford it -and those schools can choose not to accept the student.

Thanks Rob. The show clarified a number of things about the independent schools in Alberta, their focus and funding in more empirical terms than I've seen in the local media feeds.
