Firstly I understand why, given what little I know, the EPS would see a plea deal to a much lesser charge in this case to be especially egregious. It certainly appears that way to the public at large as well I would venture to guess.
Your first guest alluded to perhaps the biggest short-term danger in this situation. No "acting" police chief would EVER be likely to take such a bold step, UNLESS they had been given advice (and top cover) from somewhere that such actions would be deemed acceptable by the Government of Alberta.
The top bureaucrat/Deputy Minister of the GoA just happens to be the new police chief's old boss and the Premier's link to the public service?
The Premier has shown herself to be willfully ignorant of the workings of the legal system on multiple occasions and doesn't care to understand the intentional and historic separations between the players which support the integrity of the criminal justice system, and she has no respect for the Crown Prosecution Service, as she tries to bully her way through scandals and ethics concerns.
The letter, its distribution, the Premier's support and the linkages are clearly a direct (and inappropriate) message from the government to the CPS.
Should anyone think these linkages are "just coincidence" there is some oceanfront property for sale near Tawatinaw!
